In this class we will be drawing inspiration from our community garden. As the season evolves we will be using herbs and essential oils to make soaps, lotions and some interesting potions as well as some tasty treats! Have you ever had a sage biscuit or a lavender cookie? They are amazing as are all of the projects we will be making! Students will gain a new appreciation for all the garden has to offer and in so many creative ways!

Joy Hanken is not only a impassioned cook and talented artist, she has been an avid and celebrated gardener for 30 years as well! She calls herself "the quiet botanist," as she loves to do sculptural flower arrangements as well as grow fruits and vegetables. She also is a "gardening advocate:" Joy was the representative for the Greenwich/Cumberland Community Garden in the South End for over 10 years. For the last 25 years, Joy has lovingly built and tended a magnificent vegetable and flower garden at her cottage in Westport, RI (read about Joy's Westport garden in this 2012 Globe Magazine article).

A longtime Coolidge Corner resident, Joy is now a member of the Lawton Park Community Garden where she served as a consultant to Brookline's planning committee for the Lawton Park Community Garden and where she holds workshops on tomato planting. Joy is delighted and eager to share her enthusiasm and love for gardening with your children!
